The Ecologic Properties of  Red Pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) Forests and Their Regioning in Terms of Seed Transfer

Red pine (Pinus brutia Ten.) one of the climax trees of the Mediterranean Phytogeographical Region grows under the Mediterranean climatic regime characterized as hot and dry summer, mild and rainy winter. The biomass of the red pine is much more than the other forest tree and give more than half of the total forest production of Turkey. Red pine is found as mixed and pure stands on the slopes facing south at an altitude of more than 1000 m in the Mediterranean Region, 800 m in the Aegean Region, 400-500 m in the Marmara Region and 1000 m in the Backward Region of Black Sea region. Pinus brutia forests can be divided into six regions according to the ecological conditions : 1- Mediterranean, 2- Aegean, 3- Marmara, 4- Black Sea, 5- Transitional region between Mediterranean and Aegean , 6- Backward of Eastern Mediterranean Region (southeastern Anatolian). Each region can be divided into 21 subregions according to criteria of topography, climate and parent materials.
